I havent updated in a while! Here is a portrait series I am working on. I miss my home a lot. Naturally I decided to use photo to mend. I know what is special about my home so I decided to ask others what is special about theirs.

Virginia Ayre has lived in the Bowling Green Retirement Village alone for four years. After her husband died 11 years ago she moved from Florida to be closer to her son. Virginia says she enjoys the connivence of the retirement village while she waits to join her husband in heaven.

Jay Sites has lived in his home in Bowling Green, KY for 26 years. He moved here with his second wife when the majority of the homes on the block were owned by families. Slowly college students started to move in and rent the homes around him. Jay and his wife are now one of three homeowners on the block, the rest are rented by college students. Jay says he feels proud to still be on the block but misses how it used to be.

Makyia Fowler lives in Bowling Green, KY with her mother and siblings. She moved into her home two years ago when she was 11. Before that she moved around a lot with her mother to wherever her boyfriends lived. Makyia says she feels the happiest now that she is in a real house with her real family.

Marry Ellen Lohr is a 34-year-old biology teacher in Bowling Green, KY. She purchased her first home three years ago after spending 2 years in Africa teaching english for the Peace Corps. Marry Ellen spent most of her twenties traveling. Her home is adorned with artwork from the countries she traveled to. Marry Ellen plans to keep her home as long as possible and rent it to students when she decides to leave Bowling Green. For now, she says "I am content with my home."

Larry Wimpee lives with his wife, Martha, and dog, Spike, in a two bedroom mobile home in the Kentucky Gardens mobile home park in Bowling Green, KY. After losing his home in the country at the age of 66 due to a financial crunch, Larry and his wife moved into the mobile home park to save money. They hope one day build a new home together.

This is my last day in Buffalo and I feel pretty weird about it. I'm excited to get back to my dog and BG but I'll miss this place so much. I've learned and grown so much while being here and I feel so thankful to have had this experience. I think what I've learned about myself and how I've grown both as a photojournalist and as a person will help me in so many ways in the coming year. So as always, thanks for looking! :)

Just a small update from the last couple of days that I had to work before my family got in. I'm starting my last week in Buff and I'm kind of freaked out about how fast the summer went. I'll post something more final on my last day but for now here are a few frames I had fun shooting.

I shot a flashmob.. which wasnt really a flashmob because only 7 people showed up. Regaurdless it was really fun and the people who showed had a great time!

I shoot festivals literally every other day.. this is from a festival in Eden, a small town outside of Buffalo. A zoologist came a did a performance with turtles, birds, and of course snakes!

Like every festival I shoot there are carnival rides.. I decided to get on one that spun and shot some frames of the girls behind me.. I liked what came from it

I thought I would give an update on my experience last night. I got the oppurtunity to shoot the first same sex marriage in New York because of my really wonderful internship at the Buffalo News. Because this is something I really personally am passionate about I was really excited to cover it. Not to mention I'd be witnessing history! I went into this assignment differently than I do most. I was definately assuming there would be a lot of media present but I was in no way prepared for how much press was there. As the night went on and I began to hustle harder and harder and I realized somewhere in between being knocked in the face with a 70-200 and being shoved in a place that I didnt even fit in to shoot that this isnt't where I want to be. Sure, hard hitting news is great and it's obviously important but I felt like this process took the grace out of what I do. I enjoy people, I relish in moments, I document happiness because I feel that same happiness. Last night I couldnt even find a moment to be happy for this couple till I was laying in bed. Last night was a huge learning experience for me. I understand and appriciate those AP guys who run around like maniacs with the brutal dog-eat-dog attitude, and I respect them (in some ways) but what I love most about photojournalism is being caring and sensitive and genuinly interested in more than just meeting my deadline and getting my photos in as many big time publications as possible. I wanted to celebrate with this couple by documenting them in a careful way, not an "all for one, screw you, get out of my way" mindset. Although I am extreamly thanksful for the oppurtunity given to me by my editors and I did have a lot of fun I realized last night that all the fame and glory of reporting on big news isn't worth it to me. I appriciate and genuinely care for all of my subjects and I want that in the rest of my work.

Its been ten days, I stink at updating. sorry! enjoy..

nothing going on in this photo but the colors are pretty! haha I spent the afternoon on a sailboat, too. so that was cool!

A "prayer team" in a bad part of buffalo offered up prayers for those who were victims of gang related violence. This was an intense night..

I met Cowboy on a day I was feeling pretty crummy at an assignment I wasnt too stoked on. We got to talking and he told me he had some stories on love for me, leaned in and kissed my cheek, and told me not to let anyone get me down. this is just another reason I am convinced I have the coolest most rewarding job around..

Pretty little Liz Frantz came to visit me on her way back from her hometown and on her way back to her summer internship. oh man, I havent updated in so long. sorry! I'll get more up here from the last week or so soon but I'll just update with my stuff from shooting rowing today. I've no experience with rowing and I generally suck at sports anyway so I was nervous then I got there and there were so many beautiful men everywhere I could hardly concentrate.. maybe that's why I have hardly any frames from the mens division. haha okay so feedback from those of you who do a lot fo sports shooting would be great! enjoy..

I've been shooting the shit out of festivals and was getting bored of them. I was assigned the Roycroft Artisans festival and decided I'd come away with at least 4 portraits just to shake up my regular style of covering festivals.. this is one I shot and like. This little guy makes and designs airship ornaments.. they are SO cool!

a middle school had a sort of track and field funraiser to support the veterans of the community. It was so humid this day I was surprised I came away with anything I liked because all I could think about was the humidity- even though it was no where near what I'm used to in Kentucky/Texas.

lawnmower racing.. oh me oh my

caught this little moment while wondering around the lawnmower races.. this kid was there to watch his cousin race but said he couldnt wait to be old enough to race himself.

I shot a festival to promote small businesses, this is Jakota and she loves glitter. Jakota owns a cosmetics company and is a professional make up artist

I met Hulk Hogan, but more importantly Collen got to meet his hero. Collen suffers from Cerebral Palsy and hulk was nice enough to agree to meet and chat with him while in Buffalo.

Amherst celebrated their neighborhood on saturday with a parade, food, and entertainment. I've been shooting so many festivals lately they're all starting to blur together.

strangest thing of my life (that's a lie) but still really strange. This is what 1,000 gallons of jello looks like. The Lymphomia and Leukimia Society of Western New York "rewards" those who raise ovr $400 for the society by selling candy by filling a mini pool with cherry jello and letting participants slide in. Also, I wore my white cardigan this day.. such a bad idea.

Hello again! it's been a while since I posted last.. that means this will be kind of a long

got to shoot the opening of a dog park.. way to make me miss Penelope even more!

A parade to celebrate the archetecture of a neighborhood.. strange! but they were throwing candy! yay!

and naturally I loved this little girls gold..

really strange event, It's kind of like an Irish dancing beauty contest. All the girls wear crazy outfits and dance! they also wear wigs with HUGE curls.. there were seriously like 200 or so girls.. it was insane!

Art alive at Buff State was really fun and colorful. Students re create famous art pieces using their bodies and props

Today was a day full of firsts. It was my first really stressful day at the news, my first big transmitting fiasco, the first time I've ever been turned down three times in a row when asking to shoot pictures, and the first time to shoot anything related to death. I'll just keep it short and say I learned a lot and I needed three Excederin by the time the day was through.. enjoy :)

Shot a vigil for support two young boys who were hit while walking home last week by a drunk driver. The boys are in critical condition now. This was interesting to shoot. I didnt want to step on any toes and offend anyone. I feel like I slipped into the comfort zone of shooting kids so I wouldnt feel threatened by the adults. Next time I'll make myself shoot more adults and not be so afraid. Either way I liked a few of the frames I got from the night.

these pictures are not AT ALL what I wanted them to be. I stopped off at this park-ish place to shoot and then this man comes up in pink plaid pants/pink shirt with 6 HUGE kites and these are the two pictures I walk away with? not proud of myself at all but I got to fly a big kite and this guy was awesome. I got his number so I can try again to get something much better!

Today was a really good day in Buffalo. I had the day off of work and I spent it with some really great people. I feel really lucky to have found such a cool family to live with. Celeste and I have become pretty good friends, we're interested in a lot of the same things are far as music and popular culture go. Every Monday night her and her friends cook dinner together and watch a movie. Tonight we cooked ribs in honor of Memorial Day and we ate dinner on the river. The weather was so perfect and I really enjoyed my afternoon.

Hello all,
My second day went really well. I really love the news and the people there. Everyone has been really helpful and nice. I'm so happy I got to come here and be a part of something so great. Today, like every other day since I've been in Buffalo, it rained. I had multiple assignments but the first one and the one I ended up having the most fun at was my first assignment of the day. I had to go to a bank here in Buffalo where the branch managers taught children involved with the Big Sisters/Big Brothers foundation basic banking skills. It was a boring room and overall a pretty bland assignment but I really enjoyed being around all the people and there was such a lively energy in the room! Here are a few frames I liked..

there are definitely things about this frame I really hate but there is a lot about it that I love. This was during a bathroom break right before the new speaker came in and a few of the girls got up and started dancing in front of the blue projector screen. It just really nice to me to see them still acting like little kids even after being mentored in really adult things like banking and how to properly handshake.

Like I mentioned before the rain has been ridiculous so of course the news was looking for some photos that visually expressed how people were coping with the weather/continuing their normal routine despite the torrential downfalls.. here are a few shots I liked..

things I learned today: my hair will not look the same by the time the day is through, rush rush rush, stop no matter what, be confident.

So again this wont be a journalism photo filled post (that one comes tomorrow!) but I thought I would go ahead and post before I went to bed. I am prepping myself for my first day at The Buffalo News tomorrow! I am beyond excited!

I didn't post yesterday so I'll just fill you guys in on my night. I went down to the city of Tonawanda (I live in North Tonawanda-side note there is also a town of Tonawanda. These three are commonly referred to as "the Tonawandas" Weird.) Anyway.. I went down to the lakefront there right off of Niagra Falls Ave and got some ice cream from this place..

and sat on a bench near the water. The river, which I honestly couldnt name, is what separates the three Tonawandas and when the good weather comes this place is crawling with people. Couples, friends, families. It's a refreshing environment to be in especially when you've been eating all your meals alone for the last week. I watched the sun set and drank my root beer float and I really had a nice evening.

Today I napped a lot, way more than usual, and I went to Macys and got some pants for tomorrow. Like a true woman I've been obsessing over what I should wear to work, what is appropriate, what is too casual, or too dressy. I decided my black slacks could be too dressy but if I had khaki or grey ones that would be more appropriate. I found some grey pants that I liked well enough to buy and as I was checking out I noticed they were called "career pants." Hm.. I like that sound of that! Career? Me? Weird! I like it..

Enough about pants and root beer floats. Today was a good day, tomorrow will be even better. I am excited to get started and even more excited to grow and see where this summer leads me.

Buffalo Summer

I am in Buffalo, NY for the summer working for The Buffalo News on a 12 week photo internship and when I was told I'd be here for the summer back in January I was so excited and I spent most of the spring semester being really anxious about coming here and not really appreciating where I was. Now that I'm away I'm starting to understand just how great my family in Bowling Green is. I wont have nights in the lab to get critiques from people and I wont be able to have lunch with my friends and I think I'll miss being able to have a familiar face around when I'm feeling down but even though I will miss you guys a lot, I'm ready to kick ass and work hard so I can make my WKUPJ family proud.

I've fallen behind on blog updates but this summer I'll be working plenty to hopefully be able to update daily. I hope you guys check out what I'm doing this summer often and know I'll be thinking of you all the while. <3

here is a little visual update about where I will be living for the next three months. After finding out that a three month lease is nearly impossible to find and not pay $900/month for I got into contact with a really sweet family who hosts people regularly for internships/study abroad/ whatever. Jerry and Sheryl have opened up their home to me and been really helpful the past week. Although I'm not living right in the city I will be close enough and rent is pretty cheap which is nice. There are quirks about the home/area/and household that get me giggling. It should be an interesting summer.

-I can remember when my dad still had his Harley when I was in grade school. He used to pick me up after school and take me on rides through the countryside of my hometown. I remember how much I loved the wind on my face and through my long hair. And I can remember the exact way I felt, like there were worries.

Today during some free time I decided to take the bug on a little drive. I let my windows down, even though it was freezing, and felt my hair whip around and listened to some ryan adams- my dads favorite. I let myself go for a few miles. I wanted to just take a moment to remember the simple things and appreciate the feeling of stillness. I know I complain a lot about Texarkana but this is my home, and although the photos I took today dont really mean anything at all they're more of an emotion for me.

weightlessness. freedom. grace. home.

these feelings really come from my heart and I guess that today my nostalgia for a motorcycle ride with my dad, or a picnic with mom, or bike ride with my sister got the best of me and I shot for only me for a few minutes. and it felt good.

on a side note- I shot this while on assignment for a local high school gymnastics meet. I think it's a cute little moment that shows some team bonding and relaxation after one of the gymnast finished her last event.

Story as it progresses

I was assigned the Miss Texarkana Pageant for my local paper the Texarkana Gazette. Ever year the Gazette does something like a crowning photo on the front page the Sunday after the pageant. Well, when I was assigned I came to my editor and asked if I could find the right story/contacts could I do some multimedia or at least a little more extensive story? My editor was very understanding and open to me doing something like that so I started doing some research and got into contact with the family of Hannah Hines. The story goes like so:

Hannah is 12 years old competing in the teen division on the Miss Teen Texarkana Pageant. Hannah is the youngest contestant to EVER enter this division. Also, this is her first pageant. Hannah is different from the typical "pageant girl" in many ways. Hannah does barrel racing, lives on a ranch, and her platform reflects that side of her; "Life on the Ranch. Outdoors; The Forgotten Frontier." Although I feel there are many facets of this story I want to focus on how this pageant has helped Hannah mature while still staying true to herself.

After explaining the story to my friend Bethany and Tanner, (who, by the way, helped tremendously!) I decided contrasting who Hannah is in every light would be most important to do so that I tell this story best and most accurately. Tanner also told me to check out Greg Khan who did a similar story. I emailed Greg after studying his story for a while and deciding he could help me a lot. Greg told me I should write down the themes of the story and what I wanted to do for those themes visually which is how I narrowed down most of what I thought this story would be.

I know this story is simple and nothing tragic or outrageous but I feel like every story, whether small or big, deserves an intense amount of attention in order to be told correctly. That being said, I have gathered a few images I've shot so far. Any and all help/criticism is welcome. I really want this story to go well and if there is something I am missing, doing too much of, should realize, or show more of please feel free to comment or call.

oka, there isnt much to this photo other than kind of a cute moment.. the more I look at it the more I dont like it :/

This is Hannah her pageant coach, and her mother at her coaching session. They are looking at her interview dress.. I like the moment and I think it shows the teamwork skills Hannah has had to develop during the pageant because there are so many different people that you have to please and work with when going through something like this.

two different feelings coming from both of these photos- Hannah is at her voice lesson in both of these photos wearing her outfit for the talent portion. The top photo I love her body language of happy and carefree- which shows her childlike side.. I mean look at those feet. I just love it for that reason! The second I think comes across as he thinking about all she is taking on.. maybe it's the cliche "looking out of the window and thinking" shot and doesnt work.. you tell me?!

two photos in the same place.. she's at a dress fitting and although the composition of both isnt awesome or beautiful I think they both give off the mood of the story I'm wanting to convey. I am still questioning both of these. FEEDBACK, PLEASE!

Just a detail sort of of her putting on her shoes during voice lessons, she still has the hot pink socks on.. showing her young and carefree side transitioning into the woman she is trying to be which is represented with the heels.

So, here is Hannah picking out jewelry for her pageant with her mom, I think this photo is very important to the flow of this story- Hannah is a rodeo cowgirl tough girl competing in a world of girly girls who are on top of more experienced than her they're older too.

keeping with the theme of change and the element of contrast I was excited for this moment.. Hannah picking out her toolbox for the pageant. Hannah wanted to use a toolbox to organize her things for her pageant so her mom took her to Home Depot to pick the perfect one. I was bummed I didn't have my recorder for this because she was really particular about which would work best! But Thursday she is decorating her toolbox to make it more "girly" (SCORE!)

Hannah and her mom are very close- at first I thought this could be a story about their relationship and I guess in many ways it is but I thought this photo showed how close they are.. here Hannah is showing her mom a text that a boy from school sent her. Having a 12 year old sister myself I know how sacred text messages are so I thought this photo was important because Hannah is willing to share that part of her life with her mom.

again not sure why but I love the body language and overall feel of this photo much like the fourth photo towards the top. Hannah seems to be deep in thought. I think it portrays visually the uncertainty that she is facing with all the change she is going through.

It's been a while since I posted.. here are three photos from a shoot I did while out looking for a weather feature. I started working for the Texarkana Gazette today as an intern for the winter holiday break. I'm hoping to make some good contacts and learn as much as possible.

This summer I took an internship with the Fort Knox Army Base Public Affairs Office. I'll be assigned a company of Cadets soon to follow but my company isnt here yet so instead of wasting my life away in the office I decided to shoot a group of JROTC cadets from Jackson, Mississippi. I enjoyed the shooting, and it got me ready for when my company gets here. Shooting here has really forced me to search for clean backgrounds because everything is so busy all of the time, Im also trying to shoot with a different kind of style.

Basic Final Story

Here's the PDFs of my basic final story. Finally finished, wheew, a sigh of relief. I guess a little overview of everything would be fitting. I really loved the story I followed. Dance has always been something that interests me and I think it's important to shoot things that you like. The kids were so fun to be with and Mrs. Kathy is a subject I think I'll always keep in touch with, which is important to me as a PJ. Sure there are problems and sure there are things I would change, but overall I'm proud of myself.

Just thought I'd post with my last photo of the semester in The Herald and a few I liked throughout. Its bittersweet, I loved working for the paper and it was a wonderful opportunity, but time got away from me before I could get the application for next semester together so I wont be working for The Herald in the spring. I'll definitely be applying for fall 2010, though! :)

Look for some things from my final story to be up soon.

So, its been a little while since my last update so I thought I'd upload some things I shot after being back in Bowling Green this week since I barely touched a camera over break (bad!) I paid a little visit to the Warren County Public Library for preschool reading time today. I have such a soft spot for little kids, and I kind of feel like thats all I shoot. Any suggestions for how to get out of the slump of always shooting the same thing?

So, I am pretty lame at shooting sports action.. just ask my high school photo teacher. Here's some images I liked from the basketball game I shot on Sunday, though. This week kind of sucks, Ive been feeling bad and its showing through my shooting. Oh well, everyone has off weeks, right?

this last one is kind of weird, but I like it a lot for some reason..

So, I got an assignment last week to do a portrait of an athlete.. I tried to do several things but ended up going back to a story I found at the beginning of the year. Mary Carrell, 27 of Bowling Green, is a member of the Vette City Vixons Roller Derby team and she is seriously the most bad ass cool girl around! I wanted to capture her quirkiness and awesome personality. Tell me what you think!

So, this is my first blog entry. I guess I'll just update everyone with what has been going on lately.

I went to a dance studio to shoot around some for class and for myself. I've always loved any type of dance, so getting to hang out with all of the cute little ballerinas was really wonderful :) Here are some of my favorite shots of the day..

Oh, I'm still having some toning issues, obviously. I'll get it down sooner or later though.
